Multiple Suicide Bombings Rock Maiduguri, Casualties Reported
Several coordinated suicide bomb explosions struck Maiduguri on Monday evening, leaving multiple casualties and causing widespread panic across the metropolis.
According to a press release issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, the attacks occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on 16 March 2026 during the Iftar period.
The explosions, carried out by suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers, targeted three busy locations within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council: the Post Office area, Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The attackers reportedly detonated improvised explosive devices in crowded areas in an apparent attempt to inflict mass casualties.
Security operatives, including troops of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, swiftly responded to the incidents, securing and cordoning off the affected locations to prevent further damage.
Emergency response teams, led by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), evacuated victims to nearby medical facilities, including the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel are currently treating the injured.
Authorities disclosed that preliminary findings suggest multiple suicide bombers may have infiltrated the city to execute coordinated attacks. In response, security forces have intensified surveillance, patrols, and counter-IED operations across Maiduguri to track down any remaining suspects.
The military urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible, and report any suspicious movements or unattended items to security agencies.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the victims and reassured the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property while pursuing those responsible for the attacks.
