La Liga is once again facing calls to investigate racist chanting from supporters during a Spanish top-flight fixture, the issue has plagued the league in recent years, with players frequently subjected to abuse from opposition fans.

Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has often found himself at the centre of the storm with the Brazil international targeted by racist opposition fans on several occasions, the Los Blancos No.7 has been praised for his attitude towards the situation as he’s shone a light on the issue across Spain.

The authorities have taken action in some instances with La Liga working alongside police and the courts to impose fines, stadium bans and in some cases custodial sentences on those found guilty.

While the opening weeks of the 2025/26 season had seen relatively few high-profile incidents, new footage circulating on social media appears to show Barcelona striker Marcus Rashford targeted with racist abuse during his side’s midweek victory at Real Oviedo.

Rashford, who is still waiting to score his first La Liga goal since joining Barcelona, was substituted in the 89th minute by coach Hansi Flick.

Footage shared on social media shows abusive chants directed at the England forward as he prepared to take a corner, La Liga has not yet released an official statement on the matter.

Under La Liga’s anti-racism protocol, stadium officials are required to issue a warning over the tannoy before identifying and removing offenders from the ground, that procedure does not appear to have been followed on this occasion, with the incident seemingly only raised after the match had ended.

La Liga is now expected to contact Real Oviedo in the coming days to open an investigation, the process will involve reviewing footage from the affected area of the Estadio Carlos Tartiere, as well as gathering statements from security staff and police.
