Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has announced plans to hand over the maintenance and beautification of Obalende to a corporate organisation as part of efforts to address environmental challenges in the area. The disclosure was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Adetokunbo Wahab, following ongoing cleanup and drainage maintenance activities in the axis.
Wahab said an extensive cleanup exercise was carried out in Obalende in 2024, including areas beneath the bridge, to tackle sanitation and environmental issues. He added that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also visited the area to assess the situation and consider long term solutions.
According to the Commissioner, routine drainage maintenance has continued since the cleanup while plans for a permanent intervention were being developed. He explained that the process of engaging a corporate organisation to take over and beautify the area has been concluded.
He noted that the organisation is expected to assume responsibility for the site by February, subject to final approval by the Governor.
The Commissioner assured residents that the state government remains committed to restoring and sustaining a cleaner environment in Obalende and across Lagos.
