Lagos, Nigeria- The Lagos State Government announced today, Friday, that it has issued an immediate quit notice to squatters occupying the space beneath the Obalende Bridge and motor park, ordering them to vacate the area as part of plans to redevelop the site into an environmentally sustainable and functional public space.
The government stated that the action follows earlier warnings given to occupants as far back as 2024. Enforcement officers from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have been deployed to ensure compliance and prepare the area for transformation.
Authorities said the site will be handed over to a major private company to redesign and maintain under a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The planned redevelopment is expected to include a motor garage, public toilets, sleeping bays, and electric vehicle charging points to create a more structured and beneficial space for public use.
The government added that the move is intended to address environmental concerns and curb illegal activities previously associated with the area, improving safety for residents and commuters.
Officials noted that similar under bridge renewal projects are ongoing in other parts of Lagos. The under-bridge space in Osborne has already been converted into a football pitch, while plans are underway to transform the Adeniji/Ilubirin corridor into a more organized and useful public environment.
Senior officials from environmental, sanitation, and parks management agencies have been involved in overseeing enforcement and redevelopment efforts.
The state government reminded residents and traders that environmental regulations prohibiting street trading and illegal waste disposal remain in force, urging compliance by operating only in designated areas.
