Anambra, Nigeria – Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the closure of the Onitsha main market for one week after traders kept their shops closed on Monday in observance of the sit-at-home promoted by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The closure affects the main market, one of the largest commercial hubs in the region.

The sit-at-home has been observed regularly on Mondays across parts of the South-East. IPOB’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, on terrorism related charges, including inciting violence and actions that contributed to economic disruption.

During Soludo’s inspection, some shops in the market were closed while others were open. Both wholesale and retail sections of the market were affected.
