A former Commissioner for Works and Finance in Taraba State, Bulus Maiyaki, has strongly condemned the recent killings and burning of churches in communities across Donga and Takum Local Government Areas.
Speaking with journalists in Jalingo on Monday, Maiyaki described the attacks as disturbing and unacceptable, insisting that the violence must end immediately.
He expressed deep concern over the recurring assaults on Tiv communities in the affected councils, noting that the situation had created fear and insecurity among residents. According to him, urgent collective action by government and community leaders is needed to restore peace.
Maiyaki appealed directly to Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas to intervene decisively, urging him to work with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Council to address the crisis.
He also stressed the importance of involving traditional rulers, community elders, and other key stakeholders in dialogue and peace-building efforts to prevent further bloodshed.
“The continuous attacks, killings, and destruction of property in these communities are worrisome. Those responsible have not come out to state their grievances, yet innocent lives are being lost,” Maiyaki said.
“These killings must stop. I urge the perpetrators to lay down their arms and present their complaints through the proper channels instead of resorting to violence.”
Maiyaki, who served under former governor Jolly Nyame, warned that failure to address the situation could further destabilize the state and deepen ethnic tensions.
The former commissioner’s appeal follows reports that suspected herdsmen carried out attacks on Sunday in Donga and Takum, killing several people, displacing residents, and setting churches ablaze.
Residents and community leaders have continued to call for increased security presence and lasting measures to end the cycle of violence in the area.
