A police officer serving in Borno State, Mohammad Muhammad, has received widespread commendation for returning ₦2.6 million that was mistakenly transferred to his bank account by a fintech customer.

‎The act of honesty came to public attention through a Facebook post by Bello Jafar on Friday, in which he applauded the officer for demonstrating exceptional integrity. Jafar described Muhammad’s action as rare and worthy of recognition, noting that he could easily have ignored the error but chose to do the right thing.

‎According to the post, Muhammad, a customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA), received the funds in error from a Moniepoint user. Instead of keeping quiet about the unexpected credit, he reportedly took deliberate steps to trace the source of the transfer and ensure that the money was returned to its rightful owner.

‎“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of UBA and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” Jafar wrote.

‎He added that the officer’s conduct reflected strong moral values, responsibility, and professional discipline expected of a law enforcement officer.

‎Jafar further observed that such acts of honesty help to improve public confidence in the police. “Acts like this strengthen public trust and highlight the importance of integrity in both professional and personal life,” he noted.

‎The Borno State Police Command also acknowledged the development after a transaction receipt confirming the refund of ₦2,618,720 was shared by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, on Monday.

‎The command praised Muhammad’s action as a positive example to other officers.

‎The commendation followed ongoing efforts by the command to promote professionalism within its ranks. In an earlier update, the police announced training programmes for officers in Maiduguri aimed at strengthening discipline, respect for human rights, and ethical conduct in service delivery.
