Defence Minister Highlights National Unity at Nigerian Army Cultural Event in Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria- The Nigerian Army announced yesterday that the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa (Rtd), stressed that national unity remains a key solution to Nigeria’s current security challenges. He spoke during the West African Social Activities 2025 held at the Army Headquarters Garrison Parade Ground in Abuja, according to the Army.

Represented by Major General Henry Wesley (Rtd), the Minister described the Army as a reflection of Nigeria’s diversity, bringing together people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds under one national identity. He said unity is critical at a time when the country is facing complex security threats, the Army stated.

The Army also quoted the Minister as praising the Service for its discipline, professionalism and commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, supporting civil authorities and protecting citizens across the country.

Speaking at the event, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the West African Social Activities programme is designed to boost morale and promote unity among personnel. According to him, a united and motivated force is better equipped to tackle terrorism, insurgency and other security challenges.

In a separate address, the Commander of the Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, said the event helps strengthen bonds among officers, soldiers and their families. He added that cultural displays at the ceremony promote mutual respect and national cohesion, which are essential for effective military operations, the Army said.

The Nigerian Army said the event featured traditional performances, ceremonial activities and other displays symbolising unity and collective commitment to national security.
