Lagos, Nigeria- The Lagos State Government announced yesterday that it has inaugurated the Fire Marshal Club and carried out a safety awareness walk to encourage community participation in fire prevention and emergency response across the state.

According to the Lagos State Government, the awareness walk commenced from the Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, passed through the Ikeja Fire Station, and returned to the headquarters.

The government stated that the initiative was aimed at sensitising residents on fire safety and promoting proactive community involvement in emergency preparedness.

The Lagos State Government noted that although fire incidents remain a concern, official records show a slight reduction in reported cases between 2024 and 2025.

According to the government, fire outbreaks may not be completely prevented, but their frequency can be significantly reduced through collective responsibility, compliance with safety measures, and active participation by residents.

The statement further explained that the Fire Marshal Club is a community based volunteer system recognised internationally for strengthening fire prevention and emergency response.

The Lagos State Government indicated that members of the Fire Marshal Club will receive training and knowledge to prevent fire outbreaks and respond appropriately in emergencies.

The government highlighted that trained Fire Marshals will serve as critical links between communities and emergency responders, including through designated toll free emergency numbers.

According to the Lagos State Government, the initiative aligns with the state’s broader THEMES Plus agenda, emphasising inter-agency collaboration and enhanced emergency management across Lagos.

The statement also noted that research shows the majority of fire incidents are caused by unsafe human actions, reinforcing the importance of continuous public education and behavioural change.

The Lagos State Government confirmed that the inauguration of the Fire Marshal Club is part of its ongoing commitment to protecting lives and property through prevention, partnerships, and improved emergency response.
