A human right activist and a former presidencial candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore has reacted to the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector General of Police, describing it as acknowledgement of what he termed “illegal tenure.”

The former presidential candidate stated this while he featured on Channel Television’s flagship program ‘Morning Brief‘ and monitored by AfrikTimes on Wednesday morning.

He maintained that the former IGP did nothing to curb the rate of criminality in the country, alleging that his tenure was marked by favouritism.

“He did nothing to actually bring about professionalism. Contrary to what you’re saying, he was the IGP who promoted people who didn’t desire promotion and didn’t promote those who desired promotion. In fact, I had to lead protests against him to get policemen promoted.”

Highlighting the significance of his protests, Sowore said a good number of policemen later got promoted and also the removal of others who were engaged in dubious acts.

“And those protests led to the promotion of 74,000 policemen, the removal of over 500 policemen, senior police officers who had tinkered with their age. All those happened because we did protest.”

Recall that the human rights activist has been in court over a post on his social media handle where he called Egbetokun “illegal IGP” after his tenure was extended by President Bola Tinubu.

Egbetokun was removed as the Inspector General of Police on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 and Tunji Disu was appointed as his replacement with immediate effect.
