Abuja, Nigeria
A High Court on Wednesday in Abuja, declined to entertain the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai in his ongoing criminal trial, adjourning proceedings to April 23, 2026.
The decision followed preliminary objections by the prosecution, which argued that the application was filed prematurely and that certain legal and jurisdictional issues must first be determined before the court can consider bail.
Counsel to the former Kaduna State governor had urged the court to grant bail on liberal terms, maintaining that their client has consistently respected the rule of law and is prepared to cooperate fully with the judicial process. The defence also argued that he poses no flight risk and should be allowed to prepare for his trial outside custody.
However, the prosecution opposed the request, citing the seriousness of the charges and ongoing investigations. It insisted that the former governor should remain in custody until the court resolves the pending preliminary matters.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, Joyce Abdumalik held that the court would not entertain the bail application at this stage, stressing that jurisdictional and procedural issues must first be addressed. She subsequently adjourned the matter to April 23, 2026, for hearing of the outstanding motions.
The case has attracted significant public and political interest, with supporters and critics expressing divergent views. Security was heightened around the court premises as proceedings ended.
