Alausa Approves Oyelami as Acting NMC Chief Executive

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has approved the appointment of Prof. Benjamin Oyelami as Acting Director and Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Abuja.

The appointment takes immediate effect, according to a statement issued by the Centre’s Controller of Information and Public Relations, Onyekachi Njoku. He said the decision followed the appointment of the immediate past Director and Chief Executive, Promise Mebine, as Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke.

Mr. Njoku disclosed that the approval was conveyed in a letter signed by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education.

Prof. Oyelami, a professor of mathematics, joined the Centre more than 20 years ago from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University. Over the years, he has served in several capacities, including Coordinator of the Mathematics and Theoretical Physics programmes.

He studied at the University of Jos and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, where he obtained a second-class upper degree in Mathematics, as well as M.Sc and PhD degrees in the same discipline. Before his appointment, Prof. Oyelami was Deputy Director and Academic Planning Coordinator at the Centre.

According to the statement, his appointment is expected to strengthen the Centre’s mandate to promote excellence in research, innovation, teaching, learning and capacity building in mathematics and the mathematical sciences for national development.
