Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has appointed Dr. Dagogo S.A. Wokoma as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Barrister Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff, in a move seen as part of ongoing political realignments in Rivers State.
The appointments were conveyed in a Special Government Announcement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi, and released to journalists on Thursday. According to the statement, both appointments take immediate effect.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to hold at 2:00 p.m. at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt. Dr. Wokoma takes over from Mr. Benibo Anabraba as SSG, while Ewule replaces Edison Ehie as Chief of Staff. No official reason was given for the changes.
The development comes against the backdrop of recent reconciliation efforts between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu to address the protracted political crisis in the state.
The crisis had earlier escalated into impeachment threats against the governor before peace talks led to a truce between the rival factions. Subsequently, the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, withdrew impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The latest appointments also follow Governor Fubara’s recent dissolution of a cabinet of eight commissioners and the dismissal of all Special Advisers as part of efforts to restructure his administration.
