The Oyo State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old suspect, Basit Tijani, over the alleged defilement of a 17-year-old girl in Ilero.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Police spokeman, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command said preliminary investigation showed that the suspect allegedly lured the victim into his room and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her without her consent.
“Upon receipt of the report, Operatives of the Ilero Division immediately mobilised to the scene, secured the area, rescued the victim, and ensured her evacuation to a medical facility where she received comprehensive medical examination and socio-psychological support in line with established protocols for handling sexual offences,” the statement read in part.
The police added that the suspect was apprehended without delay, confessed to the crime and has been cooperating with investigators.
The Police further noted that the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department Gender Desk for “discreet and comprehensive investigation,” and ordered that the suspect be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
The Command reaffirmed its zero-tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, assuring the public that offenders would be dealt with in accordance with the law while urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
