The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for deliberate investment in women through education, mentorship and access to opportunities as the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2026.
In a statement marking the global celebration, Ike emphasised that empowering women brings benefits that extend beyond individuals to families, institutions and society at large.
She noted that this year’s theme, “Give To Gain,” highlights the value societies gain when women are supported and given opportunities to thrive.
Reflecting on her emergence as the first female chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Ike described the milestone as deeply personal and a clear demonstration of what becomes possible when women are given the opportunity to lead.
According to her, empowering women creates ripple effects across communities and institutions, leading to more inclusive newsrooms, richer storytelling and more responsive governance.
She also praised female journalists across Nigeria for their resilience and growing influence in the profession, noting that many continue to break barriers, cover demanding beats and mentor younger colleagues.
However, Ike stressed that celebrating women must go beyond recognition to concrete action. She urged media organisations and institutions to intentionally create safe and supportive workplaces, expand leadership opportunities for women and ensure their voices are represented in key decision-making spaces.
