The Aliko Dangote Foundation has donated 100,000 bags of 10-kilogram rice to vulnerable residents in Kano State as part of efforts to support the needy during the Ramadan period.
The distribution exercise, which began over the weekend in parts of the state capital, targeted street beggars, hawkers, passers-by and other indigent persons.
Officials who supervised the exercise included the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Farouq, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, and other government functionaries.
Dr. Mahmoud explained that the foundation handed over the consignment to the state government under the leadership of Abba Kabir Yusuf for onward distribution to vulnerable residents across the state’s 44 local government areas.
According to him, the governor constituted a team comprising the SSG, the Ministry of Agriculture and some special advisers to coordinate the exercise and ensure that the items reach the intended beneficiaries. He added that this year’s distribution was unique as the foundation entrusted the entire process to the state government.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to both the state government and the foundation for the gesture. Moses Aaron said he was surprised to receive the rice while passing by, while Dauda Abdullahi and Salamatu Garba described the support as timely relief. Another resident, Abdulgafar Abdullahi, noted that the intervention would assist many families struggling to survive, especially during the fasting period of Ramadan.
