The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of two teenagers who drowned after falling into a pond while reportedly trying to escape from suspected phone snatchers in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusuf Abdullahi, said the incident occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, at about 4:04 p.m. along Ring Road in the Kureken Sani area.

According to the statement, the Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from Muhd Abba reporting that two youths had fallen into an open body of water.

“The rescue team from the Service Headquarters was immediately mobilised to the scene. On arrival, they discovered that two 18-year-old youths, Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into an open body of water,” the statement said.

The victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, of the Unguwa Uku quarters.

Preliminary findings indicated that the teenagers fell into the pond while attempting to flee from suspected phone snatchers who were pursuing them.

In a separate incident, the Fire Service said it successfully rescued a 40-year-old man who fell into a well in the Durumin Zungura area of Kano city.

The agency explained that its control room received an emergency call at about 7:12 p.m. on Monday, March 9, from Abdullahi Aminu, reporting that a man had fallen into a well near Assahabul Khahafi in Kano Municipal.

A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim, identified as Shitu Balarabe, trapped inside the well.

“The rescue team successfully retrieved him alive and handed him over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, of Durumin Zungura,” the statement added.

The Fire Service expressed condolences to the affected families and urged residents to take precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents.

It advised the public to keep children and youths away from open water sources and ensure that wells are properly secured with protective walls and metal covers to prevent accidental falls.
