Abuja, Nigeria
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has conducted a sensitization programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights and the prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) for girls with disabilities in Abuja.
The outreach took place at the School for the Deaf, Kuje, and the School for the Blind, Jabi, as part of the Commission’s efforts to promote the dignity and protection of persons with disabilities.
Speaking during the sensitization, NHRC Executive Secretary, Tony Ojukwu (SAN) emphasized the importance of targeted awareness for girls with disabilities, who often face multiple layers of discrimination and limited access to services.
Represented by the Director of the Vulnerable Groups Department, Dahiru Bobbo, the Executive Secretary said the programme aimed to empower the girls with knowledge about their sexual and reproductive health rights, raise awareness on various forms of SGBV, and provide information on available protection and reporting mechanisms.
Representatives from NHRC and other organizations urged the girls to take their health seriously, protect their bodies, and report any form of abuse or violation of their rights.
