The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says no fatalities were recorded following a train incident that occurred on Monday along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor.

In a statement issued on Monday, the corporation disclosed that the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. near Asham and involved a rear locomotive and a passenger coach. According to the NRC, preliminary reports show that the rear locomotive made contact with the passenger coach directly in front of it due to a coupling issue.

The corporation noted that a number of passengers sustained injuries during the incident and were immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment. It added that emergency response protocols were swiftly activated, while technical teams were deployed to the scene to manage the situation.

The statement added that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) has also arrived at the location to carry out a detailed investigation into the cause of the incident in line with established safety procedures.

“The train later arrived at Idu Station at about 10:39 a.m., approximately 38 minutes behind schedule, after the affected rear locomotive and coach identified as Sp 0006 were removed from service.”

The NRC reassured passengers and the public that safety remains its top priority, adding that necessary measures are being taken to ensure the continued safe operation of train services. The corporation said further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
