The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned reports that a judge ordered a lawyer to kneel in court, describing such an action as outside the bounds of judicial authority and inconsistent with legal standards.

In a statement issued by its President, Afam Osigwe, the association reacted to an incident said to have occurred on March 16, 2026, at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The report involves Justice Mohammed Umar and lawyer Marshall Abubakar, who was representing activist Omoyele Sowore.

According to the NBA, directing a lawyer or any individual to kneel in court is not a recognized judicial sanction under Nigerian law. The body stressed that while judges have the authority to maintain order and discipline, such powers must be exercised strictly within established legal procedures, particularly in cases involving contempt of court.

The association emphasized that the courtroom must uphold dignity not just in its decisions but also in its processes. It warned that actions perceived as degrading could undermine confidence in the justice system and the professional standing of legal practitioners.

At the same time, the NBA reminded lawyers of their duty to conduct themselves with professionalism, restraint, and respect for the court, even when strongly advocating for their clients.

The association called for calm and urged that any grievances arising from courtroom incidents be handled through proper institutional and disciplinary channels, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law and judicial ethics.
