Former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator, Philip Aduda, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as he prepares to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. In the letter dated March 17, 2026, Aduda cited the persistent internal crisis within the main opposition party as the primary reason for his departure.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the People’s Democratic Party PDP with immediate effect due to the crisis in the party,” Aduda stated.

Aduda, who served as Senate Minority Leader in the 9th National Assembly, is reportedly eyeing a return to the Senate to represent the FCT under the APC platform. His decision comes amid ongoing political realignments in the FCT, where he has remained a dominant political figure.

The move is believed to have the backing of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, who has continued to assert influence over the territory’s political direction. Wike has been vocal in his opposition to the re-election of the incumbent FCT Senator, Ireti Kingibe of the Labour Party.

The minister has repeatedly criticised her performance, insisting she has no significant achievements to justify a second term and vowing she will not return to the Senate in 2027.

Although Aduda had previously dismissed reports of a possible defection, recent developments indicate a change in stance. He is said to be motivated by the need to secure stronger representation for FCT indigenes at the federal level, particularly within the Federal Executive Council. The development underscores the shifting political landscape in the FCT, as key actors reposition and alliances evolve in preparation for the next electoral cycle.
