By Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian politician and activist, has reacted on his official social media accounts to a disturbing incident in Ozoro, Delta State, calling on the Nigerian Police Force to act immediately. He said, “The Nigerian Police Force Inspector General must move swiftly into the Ozoro community in Delta State with experienced investigators to arrest everyone connected to the reported rape incident. Crimes of this magnitude demand immediate action and justice for the victims.”
The situation according to viral reports on social media platforms happened on Thursday, during the community’s annual festival. The viral video showed men attacking women in public, grabbing their clothes, and harassing them in different ways. It was reported that during the festival, women are expected to stay indoors, and those who go outside risk being targeted.
The Delta State Police Command wrote on X today concerning the incident, calling for witnesses who can provide useful information to aid the ongoing investigation. It also stated, “The command condemns this in totality. No custom or tradition is superior to the rights of citizens.”
The statement reads that “The Commissioner of Police, Delta State, CP Aina Adesola, has urged Deltans to remain calm while assuring that those responsible for this barbaric act will be arrested and brought to justice. “ The CP said he has ordered an investigation into the incident and reassured residents that the police will take every step to ensure justice is served, the statement added.
