The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, stating that the incident is currently under investigation by security agencies.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the Scheme expressed sadness over the development and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
The NYSC also acknowledged reports linking a staff member to the incident, confirming that the individual has been taken into custody as investigations continue.
“The Scheme is aware of the news circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member. We wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,” the statement said.
The organisation reiterated its strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members, stressing that it does not condone any form of misconduct or abuse of office.
NYSC further assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and justice is served.
“We wish to use this medium to reiterate that the NYSC maintains a strict code of conduct for its staff and Corps Members and will not condone any act of misconduct or abuse of office.
“We assure the public that we are cooperating fully with the law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that justice is served,” the statement added.
While urging the public to avoid speculation, the Scheme emphasised that due process must be allowed to take its course.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members across the country.
Corps Member Dies in Ogun After Alleged Abortion Complications
Victoria Ariyo, a female corps member serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, reportedly died following alleged complications from a suspected abortion procedure.
Ariyo was reported to have died on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, after allegedly terminating a pregnancy.
A Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, was accused of being in a romantic relationship with the deceased, which allegedly led to the pregnancy.
Sources indicated that complications arose after the procedure, resulting in her death.
Reports from People’s Gazette further revealed that Ariyo has since been buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Her death comes barely a month after another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who was also serving in the same local government area, died under unclear circumstances.
