Police Begin Probe into Alleged Teenage Murder at UI Swimming Pool

The body of a yet-to-be-identified teenage male was reportedly found in the swimming pool located within the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Building (SUB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement provided to journalists.

In the statement, the police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the institution informed the police about the body of a male, estimated to be around 14–15 years old, floating in the swimming pool earlier that day.

“The Oyo State Police Command is aware of the report circulating in the media concerning the discovery of the body of an unidentified teenage boy at the University of Ibadan swimming pool on 26th March, 2026.

“Factually, information was received from the institution’s Chief Security Officer that the body of the victim, aged about 14–15 years, was sighted on the surface of the swimming pool earlier that day,” the statement read.

Upon a visit to the crime scene, the command noted that the body had already been recovered from the pool and laid on the ground.

The police further revealed that blood was observed coming from the mouth and nose, with slight bruises sustained on the nose.

“Blood was observed oozing from the mouth and nose, with slight bruises on the nose. Items suspected to belong to the deceased, including a pair of shoes and a shirt, were found close to the pool, while blood stains were also observed within the pavilion area.”

DSP Ayanlade noted that the body had been evacuated to the General Hospital, Adeoyo, in Ibadan, where he was confirmed dead on arrival and subsequently deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

He added that the command is treating the case as a suspected murder, with investigations already underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The case is being treated as a suspected murder, and the Command has commenced a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

The command urged members of the public to remain calm and to rely only on verified information so as not to hinder ongoing investigations.

Individual is Not a Member of the University — UI’SU President, Temidayo Adeboye

Following the incident on Thursday, the President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Temidayo Adeboye, took to his WhatsApp status to address the student community.

In his address, he stated that the Union is aware of the incident and urged students to “remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information or speculations, especially on social media platforms.”

He further clarified that the victim is not a member of the University, adding that relevant authorities are already investigating the matter.

“Preliminary information available indicates that the individual involved has been identified as not being a student of the University. Relevant authorities are currently handling the situation, and necessary investigations are ongoing.

“We strongly advise students to avoid circulating distressing images, rumours, or unconfirmed reports, as this may create unnecessary panic and anxiety within the university community,” he noted.

Recent Death Accounts in UI

The incident adds to a series of recent death reports within the University of Ibadan community, raising growing concerns among students and residents about safety and wellbeing on and around campus.

Earlier, on March 18, Abass Motunrayo Anuoluwapo, a 100-level student in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, reportedly passed away after suffering a brief illness.

Similarly, Ifeloluwa Wisdom Akinmade, a third-year medical student, died in the early hours of Monday, March 2, 2026, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, after allegedly ingesting a toxic substance in the early hours of Sunday, March 1, at his hall of residence.

As investigations continue, the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death remain unclear, with authorities yet to establish his identity or how he gained access to the university premises.
