The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was reached following a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026, where key electoral matters, including the revalidation exercise, were reviewed.

In a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission confirmed the development, noting that the exercise would no longer proceed as earlier planned.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) today, Friday, 10th April 2026, during which, among other issues, the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise was considered.

“Following deliberations, the Commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election,” the statement read.

INEC explained that the voter revalidation exercise remains a crucial part of its mandate to ensure the credibility and accuracy of Nigeria’s voter register.

According to the Commission, the process is designed to verify and update voter records, eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries, and provide an avenue for registered voters to confirm and correct their personal details.

“The voter revalidation exercise is a critical component of the Commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters,” the statement added.

Despite the postponement, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and delivering credible polls.

“INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections,” Haruna stated.

The Commission, however, did not provide further details on whether a new timeline for the exercise would be announced after the 2027 elections.

The commission had earlier announced that the exercise would begin on April 13, 2026, as it was imperative to update the voters register in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
