Public anger has continued to mount nationwide following the killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, after a disturbing video surfaced showing a police officer shooting the deceased whose hands were already cuffed behind his back.
The footage, obtained by AfrikTimes, captures the moment the suspect, visibly restrained and posing no immediate threat, was shot at close range. In the video, the suspect could be heard pleading for his life, saying that he would like to confess and that his friend deceived him.
The video has since sparked widespread condemnation across the country, with many Nigerians demanding the immediate punishment of the officer involved and an overhaul of the Delta Police Command.
Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Command announced disciplinary action against the officer responsible. In a statement issued on April 28, the Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, described the act as an “extra-judicial killing” and further identified the officer involved as ASP Nuhu Usman.
According to the Command, the incident occurred on April 26 when operatives in Effurun acted on intelligence that the deceased had been apprehended while attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
The statement added that rather than following due process, the officer “in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm,” resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, has since ordered the immediate arrest of the officer. Authorities confirmed that he has been transferred to Abuja to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for “immediate disciplinary sanction and prosecution.”
The Command stressed that it maintains “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct,” adding that the action taken reflects its commitment to accountability and adherence to human rights standards.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the police assured the public that justice would be pursued.
However, the development has done little to calm public sentiment, as calls intensify for structural reforms and stricter enforcement of rules guiding the use of force by officers.
