Ahead of England’s upcoming clash with New Zealand at Twickenham on Saturday, loosehead prop Joe Marler has sparked debate by calling for the pre-match haka to be scrapped. Writing on the social media platform X, Marler expressed his view, stating, “The haka needs binning. It’s ridiculous.” He further commented, “It’s only good when teams front it with some sort of reply like the league boys did last week.” The remarks prompted immediate backlash, leading Marler to deactivate his X account briefly.

Upon returning to the platform, Marler clarified his intent, saying, “Context is everything. Just having a bit of fun trying to spark interest in a mega rugby fixture. Some wild responses. Big love x.” He humorously added, “Also needed to satisfy my narcissism.”

Although Marler is not in consideration for selection due to a foot injury sustained during July’s first Test against New Zealand, his comments have reignited discussions surrounding the haka and how opponents should respond to the All Blacks’ pre-match tradition. In rugby union, World Rugby regulations require teams to stay within their half of the field while the haka is performed.

England was previously fined £2,000 for breaching this rule during the 2019 Rugby World Cup when they lined up in a ‘V’ formation and crossed the halfway line before their semi-final against New Zealand.

England head coach Steve Borthwick has named his team for the match, with George Furbank at fullback and Jamie George serving as captain. Notable inclusions in the squad are Henry Slade, Maro Itoje, and Marcus Smith, among others.
