- JAMB Confirms Error in 2025 UTME Results
- Over 379,000 Candidates Affected
- Board Promises Swift Correction and Fairness
Abuja, Nigeria — May 14, 2025
The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, has acknowledged a technical glitch in the recently released 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results, pledging that the about 379,997 candidates affected would retake the examination.
In a tearful address at the JAMB National Headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, Professor Oloyede expressed deep regret over what was initially believed to be the board’s most successful UTME yet, admitting that an error affecting the examination grading process at some centres has sparked widespread criticism and concern.
Oloyede revealed that after the official release of results on May 9, 2025, the board was inundated with complaints, leading to an urgent audit of its systems. This audit confirmed that results from certain centres in Lagos and the South-East region of Nigeria had been compromised due to a failure in a technical update.
“Without equivocation, there are grounds for the complaints. This press conference is to unveil the bitter truth of our findings,” Oloyede stated.
According to JAMB, 65 centres affected over 206,000 candidates in Lagos State, and 92 centres involved more than 173,000 candidates in the South-East region. The issue arose after a last-minute software update, intended to shuffle examination options, was improperly executed by a service provider, leaving some delivery servers unpatched.
Oloyede detailed the rigorous quality assurance measures JAMB had previously implemented, including simulation tests, mock exams, and several monitoring groups. He admitted, “Man proposes, but God disposes.”
Despite the extensive safeguards, including an internal software system called JAMBTEST, the error went unnoticed. “We work tirelessly, and we set our standards high,” he emphasised. “But we are not infallible.”
The Registrar confirmed that the error has now been corrected and assured the public that steps are being taken to amend the scores of all affected candidates. He also commended critics for holding the board accountable.
“Indifference is the real enemy,” he added, fighting back tears. “Your outcry shows you care.”
JAMB is expected to reissue corrected results shortly, and further disciplinary or remedial actions against the responsible technical teams may follow.
Meanwhile, the board urges calm among candidates and parents, assuring them that no student will be denied fair consideration in the 2025 admission cycle.
