  • Public demands transparency and compensation in controversial highway project

Lagos, Nigeria – Protests have intensified in Nigeria over the controversial Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, as demonstrators demand justice for landowners affected by the massive infrastructure development. The protesters are also calling for the immediate release of a detained activist who has been at the forefront of opposition to the project.

The highway, intended to improve connectivity between coastal states from Lagos to Calabar, has come under heavy criticism for its environmental impact, displacement of communities, and alleged lack of transparency.

Residents and activists argue that the government’s land acquisition process has been fraught with inadequate consultation and poor compensation, leaving many families without homes or fair redress.

On 9 July 2025, protesters gathered at the Lagos Ministry of Works to express their frustration. Their demands included $250 million in compensation for losses attributed to the highway’s realignment, particularly those affecting foreign direct investment in local areas. They also urged the withdrawal of soldiers reportedly deployed to suppress dissent, accusing Minister of Works Dave Umahi of sanctioning military abuse.

The detention of a prominent activist, reportedly linked to the ongoing demonstrations, has further inflamed tensions. Human rights advocates argue that the government’s response reflects a pattern of using security forces to stifle opposition to large-scale development projects, raising serious concerns about civil liberties in Nigeria.

While officials maintain the highway project is essential for national development, critics insist that it must not come at the cost of human rights, environmental degradation, and community displacement.

As diplomatic and civil society pressure mounts, many are calling on the government to adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach to future infrastructure planning.
