5-year visa for US citizens

Presidency denies issuance halt

Summary

  • Nigeria confirms continued issuance of 5-year multiple-entry visas to US citizens
  • Federal Government dismisses claims of policy change as misinformation
  • Presidency urges continued dialogue over US visa restrictions on Nigerians

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Presidency has debunked circulating claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu halted the issuance of five-year multiple-entry visas for United States citizens, insisting the policy remains in place in line with bilateral agreements and diplomatic reciprocity.

In a statement released on 10 July 2025, the Presidency emphasised that from the outset of his administration, President Tinubu directed all ministries and agencies to uphold existing bilateral agreements with foreign nations, including the United States.

The statement, issued via State House Digital and obtained by AfrikTimes, also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining reciprocal visa arrangements.

The clarification comes amid widespread public concern following the recent adjustment to US visa policy for Nigerians, which now restricts most non-immigrant visa categories to single-entry with 90-day validity. The Nigerian government has since criticised the US move as unreflective of true reciprocity.

While Nigeria continues to offer long-term visas to US citizens, the new 90-day single-entry policy only applies to recently introduced e-visas, which are designed to replace the now-defunct visa-on-arrival system.

According to the Presidency, the e-visa is a faster and more secure option aimed at boosting investment, tourism, and ease of doing business.

The Federal Government highlighted that while Nigeria offers e-visas to US citizens, the gesture has not been reciprocated. Nonetheless, officials reaffirmed their commitment to engaging with US authorities in the spirit of mutual respect and long-standing partnership to resolve any outstanding issues.
