Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Coroner’s Court has concluded that the death of Nigerian musician Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, resulted from medical negligence. Delivering the final ruling on July 11, 2025, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi found that Mohbad died following a series of improperly administered injections by Feyisayo Ogedengbe, an unlicensed auxiliary nurse.
According to the court, Ogedengbe administered injections of tetanus, paracetamol, and antibiotics on September 12, 2023, at Mohbad’s Lekki residence without a doctor’s supervision or prescription. Mohbad had sustained a minor cut on his right arm two days earlier. The coroner ruled that the severe adverse reaction to the injections, characterised by vomiting and convulsions, ultimately led to his death.
The coroner specifically recommended that Ogedengbe be prosecuted under Section 251(e) of the Lagos State Criminal Law (2015) for reckless and negligent acts. Ayobami Sodiq, also known as Spending, a friend who called the nurse to treat Mohbad, will also face charges.
The inquest dismissed foul play or homicide as the direct cause of death, finding no legal link between Mohbad’s passing and his well-publicised disputes with his former promoter Azeez Fashola (a.k.a. Naira Marley) or associate Sam Larry. However, the coroner acknowledged that Mohbad had endured prior harassment, which likely contributed to public suspicion and emotional reactions to his death.
The ruling also exposed deeper systemic issues in Nigeria’s healthcare and justice systems. The court criticised the absence of proper medical care at the time of the incident, the unauthorised practice of medicine by unlicensed individuals, the police’s failure to act on a petition Mohbad had submitted before his death, alleging threats to his life, and the rushed burial of the musician by his father without a death certificate or autopsy.
Although the autopsy conducted after exhumation was inconclusive due to the advanced decomposition of the body, pathologists ultimately attributed Mohbad’s death to the complications arising from the injections.
Magistrate Shotobi issued several recommendations to prevent similar tragedies, including stricter regulation of medical practitioners, strengthening of emergency medical response systems, and legal reforms to address bullying and abuse within the entertainment industry.
Mohbad’s death in 2023 sparked nationwide protests and widespread outrage, particularly on social media. While the inquest’s findings bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding his death, calls for broader accountability persist. Public discourse continues to underscore the need for healthcare reform, a more responsive justice system, and protection for vulnerable individuals in high-pressure industries.
