The Deputy Governor of Adamawa State and Chairman of the State Primary Health Care Task Force, Prof. Kaletapwa George Farauta, has emphasized that effective leadership and good governance are crucial for delivering quality healthcare services.
Farauta made the remark while commending the Enhanced Leadership, Governance and Management Capacities (ELGMC) project supported by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) during a stakeholders’ engagement workshop held in Yola, Adamawa State, last Thursday.
Speaking at the workshop, Farauta described the ELGMC initiative as timely and vital for improving healthcare delivery across the state. This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Development Governance International Consult (DGI Consult), Dr. Gafar Alawode.
According to the Deputy Governor, strengthening leadership, governance and management systems within Primary Health Care is fundamental to improving planning, implementation, monitoring and accountability in the health sector.
She noted that these elements are critical to expanding access to and utilisation of high-impact Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition (RMNCAH+N) services across Adamawa State.
Farauta also expressed appreciation to UNICEF and DGI Consult for their continued commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare system through initiatives such as the ELGMC and SARAH projects.
She added that partnerships and collaborations remain essential as the state government works toward building a more resilient and people-oriented Primary Health Care system capable of delivering quality services to residents.
Earlier, the Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Chief Bilishan Felix Tangwami, described the workshop as a wake-up call for improved health management. He said the training would equip health policy implementers with the knowledge needed to enhance efficiency in healthcare delivery, with strong support from the state governor and deputy governor.
Also speaking, the Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, stressed that strong leadership at all levels — including local government and health facility levels — is vital for efficient healthcare delivery. She thanked DGI Consult and other partners for implementing the programme in the state.
In his remarks, Dr. Sylvester Akandewho, who represented the CEO of DGI Consult, commended the Adamawa State government for demonstrating strong political commitment, particularly through the Deputy Governor’s presence at the event.
He explained that the workshop serves as an entry meeting for the project, noting that further activities will involve health sector leaders at various levels across the state.
Other state officials present at the workshop included the Executive Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Dr. Mary Paninga; the Executive Secretary of the State Health Management Authority, Dr.Amos Ujulu; and the Executive Chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Authority, Dr. Sulieman Saidu Bashir.
