The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the bomb blasts that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State, leaving multiple Nigerians dead and many others injured. The party described the attacks as a stark reminder that terrorism anywhere in the country is an attack on all citizens.
In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bollaji Abdullahi, the party extended condolences to the victims, their families, and the people of Maiduguri. The party commended first responders and security personnel for their efforts in assisting the injured and restoring calm.
“The courage of our security personnel and first responders is commendable, but this tragic incident raises serious questions about the state of security in Nigeria. Maiduguri should not be returning to a situation where coordinated bomb attacks threaten the lives of ordinary citizens.”
ADC criticised the absence of the President at a time of such a serious security breach, noting that leadership must prioritise protection of lives over other engagements. “It is troubling that the President is currently outside the country while Nigerian soldiers and civilians are being killed by terrorists,” Abdullahi added.
The party also accused senior officials responsible for security of being distracted by political matters. “The National Security Adviser is targeting opposition figures, while the Minister of Defence is on television planning the APC national convention,” the statement read.
According to ADC, any serious country would respond to such a security breach with full attention from the government, including addressing the nation and taking responsibility. The party said failure to do so undermines public confidence and endangers citizens.
Furthermore, the party emphasised that the protection of lives and property is the most basic responsibility of the government. “It cannot be treated as secondary to political distractions or competing priorities,” he said, urging for an immediate, transparent review of security in the North East.
The party also called on the Federal Government to provide urgent medical care and adequate support to families affected by the attacks. “Victims must receive urgent medical care, and adequate support and compensation must be provided to affected families.”
Highlighting the broader security situation, ADC warned that Nigeria cannot continue on a path where loss of lives becomes routine. “We are only in the third month of the year, and already thousands of Nigerians have been killed in violent attacks across the country. This is unacceptable,” the statement said.
ADC concluded that the safety of Nigerians must remain the highest priority of government at all times. “Protecting citizens should be the government’s topmost responsibility, without compromise.”
According to media reports, about 23 people have been confirmed killed and at least 100 injured in what was described as coordinated bombing attacks in three locations in Maiduguri. The bombs reportedly went off at about 7:24pm on Monday. A main market, the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover were the locations hit.
