The coalition African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised comments by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who reportedly dismissed opposition concerns over the proposed 2026 Electoral Act.

In a reaction, the opposition party via a statement by the National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, questioned how anyone could feel comfortable presiding over legislation that would prevent elections from being challenged on the basis of certificate forgery. The party argued that such a provision undermines accountability and weakens the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to the ADC, it is troubling that the legislature would consider enacting laws that appear to lower ethical standards in governance. The party described the development as a reflection of what it called a “kakistocracy” under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.

The ADC maintained that electoral laws should strengthen transparency, credibility, and public confidence in democratic institutions rather than shield candidates from scrutiny over issues such as certificate authenticity.

The party however called for a review of the controversial provision, insisting that Nigeria’s legal framework must uphold integrity and accountability in the electoral system.
