IPOB Sit-at-Home Order Looms

Army Moves to Secure WAEC Students

Summary

  • Military assures safety of WAEC candidates amid IPOB sit-at-home tension
  • Army reclaims Orsumoghu, key base of IPOB/ESN operations
  • Troops deployed across Anambra, South-East for robust patrols
  • Exams to proceed as scheduled under tight security cover

The Nigerian military has pledged unwavering security support to ensure the safe conduct of the ongoing West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams in Anambra and the wider South-East region, amid growing fears over a sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Sector Commander of Sector 5, Operation UDO KA, Colonel Adamu Kabiru Mohammad, gave the assurance during a Defence Media Team tour of volatile flashpoints including Orsumoghu in Ihiala Local Government Area, a former stronghold of IPOB and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Speaking in Nofija, Orumba North LGA on Tuesday, Colonel Mohammad stated that inter-agency collaboration has intensified, with troops fully mobilized to protect exam centers against any threat arising from IPOB’s May 29–30 shutdown directive.

“Everything has been put in place to ensure the children write their WAEC exams peacefully,” he said, noting that troops have been directed to conduct extensive patrols across vulnerable locations.

IPOB’s directive, issued to commemorate its so-called “fallen heroes,” has sparked anxiety among students and parents. However, the military dismissed the threats as psychological warfare aimed at inciting fear through isolated attacks amplified on social media.

In a related development, Colonel Mohammad revealed that troops had successfully flushed out IPOB/ESN fighters from Orsumoghu, once a notorious operational base, through joint efforts with vigilantes and other security agencies.

“Repeated attempts by IPOB to retake the area have been decisively defeated,” he said, adding that calm has since returned to affected communities.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, assuring that the examinations will proceed without disruption under reinforced military protection.
