Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, has decided to leave the club, reportedly attracting interest for a potential role with Evangelos Marinakis’s group of clubs. Marinakis, who currently owns Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave, is reportedly looking to expand his holdings within Europe, with Edu being considered for a key position. However, it’s yet unclear if Edu has committed to this new role.
Arsenal has been taken by surprise by Edu’s decision. Edu, who joined Arsenal as technical director in July 2019 before being promoted to the club’s first-ever sporting director in November 2022, has been instrumental in shaping the team’s squad, overseeing signings like Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice and managing the exits of players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil. During his tenure, Arsenal has spent approximately £867 million, making them one of the Premier League’s highest spenders alongside Chelsea and Manchester United. Under Edu’s leadership, Arsenal won the FA Cup and finished as Premier League runners-up in the last two seasons.
The 45-year-old had been away on personal matters in Brazil and returned to London last week, where he reportedly finalized his decision. In September, he reaffirmed his commitment to Arsenal’s long-term ambitions.
