Six final-year nursing students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology have reportedly died in a road accident while travelling for their semester examinations.

According to media reports, the students, said to be female 500-level participants in the institution’s Open and Distance Learning programme, were on a trip to the exam centre when the crash occurred. One of the victims was reportedly pregnant.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the university authorities nor the Oyo State Police Command had issued an official statement on the incident.

The tragedy has triggered widespread grief on social media, with many sympathisers mourning the victims and renewing calls for urgent rehabilitation of the Oyo–Ogbomoso road, which they described as accident-prone.

“That Oyo–Ogbomoso road is one of the deadliest in the country and it has remained in poor condition for years,” an X user, @FaladeTolu_, wrote while recounting her experience plying the route for several years.

Another user, @ABrownfinelady, expressed shock at the development, saying she once had to pass through a bush path to avoid gridlock caused by the bad portion of the road.

Similarly, @OlumayowaA78709 lamented the repeated loss of lives on the highway, noting that many students of the institution had shared frightening experiences while travelling on the route.

Like many friends, my brother also attended Lautech, Ogbomoso and they all shared so many scary stories of mishaps on the Oyo -Ogbomoso highway. They’ve refused to complete and fix that road for years. See how those young lives are being wasted?”
