A children’s song that started as a simple animated video has grown into one of the biggest digital entertainment successes in history, nearly 10 years after it was first posted on YouTube.

Baby Shark Dance, uploaded by South Korean educational brand Pinkfong on June 17, 2016, is now the most streamed video on YouTube, with over 16.6 billion views as of today.

What began as a catchy sing along for young children has crossed age, culture and language barriers, becoming common in homes, schools and popular culture around the world. Its repetitive lyrics, bright animation and easy melody have made it popular among children and familiar to many parents.

Over the years, Baby Shark has been adapted into merchandise, television programmes, live performances and content on other streaming platforms. Since its upload on June 17, 2016, the video has continued to gain views and, in November 2020, it became the most viewed video on YouTube, a position it still holds today with over 16.6 billion views.

As the video approaches 10 years since it was uploaded, it remains one of the most successful pieces of online content ever created and a major reference point for digital creators and media companies.
