Abuja, Nigeria
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised the timetable for the 2027 general elections, moving the dates earlier than previously announced.
Under the new schedule, presidential and National Assembly elections will now be held on January 16, 2027. Governorship and state houses of assembly elections are set for February 6, 2027.
The change was disclosed on Thursday in a statement by Mohammed Haruna, INEC national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee.
Recall that AfrikTimes earlier reported that INEC had initially fixed February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly polls.
However, the commission said the adjustment became necessary following the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022, and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026.
