The president of the Congolese Football Federation, Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of embezzling about $1.3 million in federation funds.

A court in Congo delivered the verdict after concluding that Mayolas diverted the money for personal use in a corruption scheme that also involved members of his family.

According to the ruling, the football chief’s wife and son were also convicted for their roles in the financial misconduct and have been handed jail terms.

Prosecutors said the funds were misappropriated over a period while Mayolas was overseeing the administration of football in the country. The case drew widespread attention within the sporting community, raising concerns about transparency and governance in football management.

Authorities said the judgment sends a strong signal about accountability in public and sports institutions, emphasizing that misuse of funds will attract severe penalties.

The scandal is expected to have significant implications for the leadership structure of the federation as football authorities move to restore credibility and stability within the organization.
