Abuja, Nigeria – Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu has been appointed as the Executive Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme, succeeding Dr. Mike Ryan.

The appointment of the Nigerian-born epidemiologist marks a significant milestone in global health leadership, with the Federal Government of Nigeria lauding the development as both timely and strategic.

In a congratulatory statement released in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, CON, described Dr. Ihekweazu as “an exceptional leader and a loyal team player” whose appointment represents “the right choice at the right time.”

Prof. Pate noted that in an era of pandemics, climate-related health challenges, and fragile health systems, the world needs principled and effective leadership.

“His visionary leadership, experience, and unwavering dedication to public health will serve the world well,” Prof. Pate said, adding that the WHO has made “an excellent choice.”

Dr. Ihekweazu is widely respected for his work in global health security and epidemic intelligence. His appointment comes at a critical time for the international health community, grappling with the challenges of emerging infectious diseases and the ongoing efforts to bolster global preparedness and response mechanisms.

Shortly after his appointment, Dr. Ihekweazu made his first official visit to Nigeria in his new capacity. Welcoming him, Prof. Pate referred to him as a “brother,” noting the significance of his return to Nigeria for strategic engagements focused on health security, outbreak preparedness, and the fight against polio.

“Our discussions reinforced Nigeria’s deep and longstanding partnership with WHO, particularly in strengthening health systems, accelerating polio eradication, and enhancing regional health security,” Prof. Pate shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The talks also addressed crucial issues including regulatory efficiency, cross-border collaboration, and the use of intelligence-driven surveillance systems to detect and respond to emerging health threats.

Dr. Ihekweazu’s visit aligns with the broader goals of the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (#NHSRII), an agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at repositioning the country’s health sector.

According to Prof. Pate, Nigeria remains firmly committed to safeguarding public health, advancing sustainable health investments, and reinforcing its role as a leader in Africa’s health security architecture.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has pledged full support for Dr. Ihekweazu in his new global role, expressing confidence that his leadership will help shape a safer and healthier future for all.
