Benin City, Nigeria — Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has moved to clarify recent statements concerning visits by Peter Obi to Edo state, asserting that his comments were a directive on adhering to established protocol rather than a threat.
Earlier reports had suggested that Governor Okpebholo issued a warning to Peter Obi, advising him against visiting Edo state without prior notification or security clearance. These reports cited an alleged increase in violence following Obi’s previous visit, leading to widespread criticism and condemnation.
However, in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo refuted claims of issuing any threat. He stated that his initial remarks had been misinterpreted, and his intention was solely to underscore the necessity for high-profile individuals, particularly politically exposed persons, to inform and seek security clearance from the governor’s office before engaging in public activities within the state.
The governor’s office emphasised that such protocol is vital for safeguarding lives and property, suggesting that disregard for these procedures could create security vulnerabilities for both visitors and the general public. They highlighted the governor’s constitutional duty as the chief security officer of Edo state to ensure the safety and security of all residents.
Furthermore, the clarification noted that Governor Okpebholo’s concerns regarding discretion in public philanthropy were informed by both security intelligence and moral responsibility.
The statement urged that his comments should not be twisted for political motives, reiterating that Edo state welcomes all law-abiding Nigerians, provided that appropriate security and procedural protocols are observed.
