Former Kano State federal lawmaker, Farouk Lawan, who was convicted for demanding and accepting a $500,000 bribe, has regained his freedom. Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, had been sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the bribery scandal.

On January 26, 2024, the Supreme Court upheld Lawan’s conviction, confirming the judgment against him. He was found guilty of soliciting a $3 million bribe from Nigerian billionaire oil magnate Femi Otedola in 2012 while serving as chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating fuel subsidy fraud.
