The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has dismissed as false a viral message warning members of the public not to open the SMS notifying them of the commencement of its “Operation Go Cashless” initiative.
FAAN is insisting that the text message is genuine and part of its nationwide sensitisation campaign.
In a press release dated February 27, 2026, FAAN said the counter-message, which alleged that the SMS link was a scam designed to drain bank accounts, was “false, misleading, and unfounded,” stressing that the authorised notification was officially disseminated in partnership with MTN Nigeria.
“The official SMS notification informing members of the public about the implementation of Operation Go Cashless is legitimate and was duly disseminated by FAAN,” the authority stated.
FAAN added that the programme will commence on March 1, 2026, noting that it forms part of its “structured transition to a fully cashless, contactless payment system across all airport payment points nationwide.”

The agency had earlier announced the rollout of the initiative, urging airport users to obtain the Go-Cashless card at designated commercial offices and access gates across the country ahead of the commencement date.

It advised the public to ignore the circulating counter-message and rely only on verified information from its official communication channels.
“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the false counter-message and rely only on verified information issued through FAAN’s official communication platforms,” the statement said.
