The Federal Government has approved a multi-billion naira contract for the construction of a 420-kilometre dual carriageway linking Akwanga in Nasarawa State to Gombe State, passing through Plateau and Bauchi States.
The project was disclosed on Sunday by the Director of Information in the Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed Ahmed Abdullahi, during an inspection tour of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Bauchi–Gombe federal highway.
Abdullahi explained that the visit was part of the ministry’s “stationisation project,” aimed at monitoring progress on federal road projects and assessing public satisfaction with government infrastructure delivery. He noted that improving transportation infrastructure is one of the eight priority areas of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stressing that the government remains committed to providing quality roads to support economic growth and social development.
According to him, the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe dualisation project is the fourth of four major legacy road projects approved by the Federal Executive Council. He listed the others as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway and the Calabar–Ebonyi–Abuja Superhighway. He added that the projects are designed to connect all regions of the country and promote national integration, while also incorporating modern features such as solar street lighting and renewable energy components.
On the ongoing rehabilitation of the Bauchi–Gombe road, Abdullahi disclosed that the 35.4-kilometre project was awarded in April 2024 and commenced in June 2024. He stated that 21.8 kilometres of the road have so far been completed, significantly improving travel time and reducing accidents along the once-dangerous corridor. He described the project as critical to boosting economic activities between the North-East and other parts of Nigeria.
Site Manager of Triacta Nigeria Limited, the company handling the project, Engineer Joseph Samaha, assured that work was progressing in line with contract specifications. He revealed that 18 kilometres of the dualisation project have already been completed and expressed confidence that substantial work would be achieved before the onset of the rainy season to ensure uninterrupted movement for commuters.
Representatives of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) commended the Federal Government for the initiative. They noted that the improved road network would enhance safety, ease transportation of agricultural produce and stimulate economic development across communities along the route.
