Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died in London on Sunday, 13 July 2025. This declaration comes as part of a seven-day national mourning period earlier announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following President Tinubu’s approval. The minister described the holiday as a gesture of respect for the late President’s years of dedicated service and his significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and governance.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”
He further urged citizens to honour Buhari’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and unity—principles the former president was known to advocate throughout his tenure.
As previously directed, national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Sunday, 13 July. The Federal Government also extended its condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The notice was signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
