Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has sanctioned the football federations of Nigeria and Democratic Republic of the Congo, following disciplinary breaches during their recent World Cup play-off encounter.

According to the world football governing body, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after spectators were found to have thrown objects during the match. The incident was ruled as a violation of Articles 17 and 17.2(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which relates to order and security at matches.

In a separate ruling, the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association received a heavier sanction after supporters were reported to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the game. The act breached Article 17.2(d) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, resulting in a 5,000 Swiss francs fine for the Congolese federation.

Meanwhile, the head coach of the Nigeria national football team, Eric Chelle, stirred controversy after the match by accusing officials from the Congolese camp of resorting to “voodoo” following Nigeria’s defeat in the play-off clash.
