Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that significantly strengthens the ruling party’s grip on Nigeria’s political map.
The governor announced his defection during a statewide broadcast from Yola on Friday, declaring that the decision was taken in what he described as the best interest of Adamawa State and its people. According to him, the move was collectively made alongside his cabinet members and key PDP officials in the state.
“This decision is driven by the need to align with progressive forces that can deliver sustainable progress for our state,” Fintiri stated.
With the latest development, the APC’s control reportedly rises to 30 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, consolidating its dominance nationwide. The remaining states are governed by other political parties, including the Accord Party in Osun, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra, and the Labour Party in Abia.
Political observers say the defection could reshape the balance of power ahead of future electoral contests, particularly in the North-East region.
