Chaos erupted on Broad Street, Lagos Island, on Tuesday 16th of September, 2025, after a fire broke out at the Afriland Building, leaving several workers trapped.
The fire outbreak started around midday and quickly spread through the high-rise, sending thick smoke across the Marina axis, one of Lagos’ busiest commercial districts. The incident forced office workers and passersby to scamper for safety as emergency sirens filled the area.
The building houses several major establishments, including a branch of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and an office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Many employees were still inside when the fire escalated, and some were seen jumping from upper floors in desperate attempts to escape. Rescue teams battled to evacuate those who remained trapped.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it was reported that no fatalities had been officially confirmed at the time of filing. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, supported by other emergency agencies, responded swiftly to the scene in an effort to bring the situation under control.
The incident also caused heavy gridlock around the Marina as security operatives cordoned off the area and onlookers gathered nearby.
