  • His spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed he passed away in London on Sunday
  • Buhari had been receiving treatment in the UK since April 2025

London/Abuja – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 81. According to a statement from his longtime spokesperson Garba Shehu, Buhari passed away on Sunday afternoon at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical treatment since April.

In a brief statement, the family said, “May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, had a history of seeking medical attention in the UK during and after his presidency. His latest visit to London began as a routine check-up, but he was later hospitalised after falling ill.

On 3 July, his aide Bashir Ahmad addressed growing speculation, stating that Buhari was unwell but stable and not in the Intensive Care Unit.

No official announcement from the Nigerian government had been released at the time of this report.

During his time in office, Buhari was frequently absent from the country for medical reasons, sparking controversy and raising questions about the state of Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure. His long absences also fuelled conspiracy theories, most notably the unfounded claim that he had died in 2017 and been replaced by a body double named “Jubril” from Sudan, a rumour he publicly debunked.

Buhari’s confirmed death on 13 July 2025 now ends years of speculation surrounding his health. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigerian political history, with tributes and reflections pouring in from across the political spectrum.

Further details, including funeral arrangements and official statements, are expected in the coming days.
